"The Joyful Hearts" ensemble will be excited to meet the audience during a charitable concert to be held at 18:00 on December 23, 2016 at Jono Basanavičiaus g. 18, Vilnius, (St Constantine & Michael Church). The admission is free for all to enjoy!

The sisters of St. Elisabeth Convent have carried out their ministry in several boarding homes for mentally challenged adults and children with special needs for about twenty years. They provide art therapy, do handicrafts, and organise theatrical performances. There is an ensemble named "The Joyful Hearts" directed by Nun Sophia. Its participants live in one of the boarding homes for people with special needs, many of whom have special talents, too. In spite of their physical and mental disabilities, they never give up. Their creativity always comes to the rescue. The members of this ensemble found themselves in the boarding home at difficult moments of their lives. However, they are united in their desire to stand up strong and make other people happy. "The Joyful Hearts" ensemble is an essential part of their lives. It is here that they find inspiration, boost their creativity, make friends, and support one another.

Andrei Natalchuk, a soloist of the ensemble, is blind. He cannot see this world but he can sense it perfectly with his heart. He expresses his emotions in songs.

- I like all songs, - he says. – There is no such thing as a song that is not my favourite one. Each song has a soul, and each of them is fabulous in its own right!

Helena Zakharevskaya, another soloist of the ensemble, shared her secret dream with us. “I like performing – people applaud, and it is so encouraging! I would like to visit France so much! I would like to see the Eiffel Tower in Paris, to climb it and to look at the city! I would also love to talk with people who live there. Each trip is something to remember: new friends and new moments to cherish.”

"The Joyful Hearts" have already toured Russia with charitable concerts. Now they will hopefully visit Europe on their Singing Hearts tour with visa support provided by the Embassy of France in Belarus. The members of the ensemble would like to thank the Rev Konstantin Lazukin for his assistance in organising their Advent concert tour in Vilnius.

The Three Parables, a film made by the Studio in honor of St John the Warrior at St. Elisabeth Convent, has already become popular with the public and is well known both in Belarus and abroad because every person can find something important for his or her soul in these interesting and wise short stories. There is nothing surprising in the fact that during the production of the next Three Parables chapter the passers-by who noticed the film crew would stop and try to come closer in spite of all prohibitions in order to see their favorite characters. Many would ask when they would see the sequel of the film on screen and what it was about this time but, perhaps, there are few who know how long and labor-consuming the process of filming each episode is, how much strength and effort it calls for from every person involved: just a couple of minutes of screen time are worth several hours or even days of hard work by a professional crew of filmmakers.

During the production of the previous series of this film, many people, including even the monastics, would approach an elderly priest and ask for his blessing. “Oh no!” he would reply. “I have no right to do it.” And he was right because in real life he is not a cleric but an actor, a People’s Artist of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Tkachenok, who plays the part of the Elder. He had played the same part in the previous series of the Three Parables. “I had played the part of a priest in films produced by the Belarusfilm film studio,” Alexander Tkachenok says. “So this role is not new to me but I certainly grasp the responsibility it implies. The ideas found in The Three Parables do not contradict my own worldview. They are kind and of everlasting importance; they attempt to present its main ideas in an easy-to-watch and sometimes even entertaining way. I was present during the first nights of the previous series of the Parables and I saw that there were many young people who came to watch the film, I noticed some of the people cry and laugh during the film. This is the proof of the fact that the film did not leave people indifferent. Of course, I am not a priest, I am advised and guided by the director and the crew but when people ask for my blessing, I realise that they acknowledge me in this role.”

The fact that an actor is acknowledged in his role means, first of all, that the makeup artist did a good job on him. Olga Babitskaya is a makeup artist. The characters painted by her looked so natural that many of the passers-by who saw the elder and the young novice thought that they were real. Olga told us that another makeup artist had worked on the previous parts of the Parables; that was why some of the images had already been created and all that was left for her was to reproduce them accurately. On the one hand, this may seem easier but on the other hand it lays double responsibility on the artist. There is always something coming unstuck and falling on the floor during the production of a film. A makeup artist has to readjust and even remodel some elements, so he or she works in extreme conditions. “If something like that happens on stage, this is a disaster but in filmmaking this can be fixed. It was quite an easy task to make up Mikhail Yessman because he is very picturesque in his role even without the makeup. However, it was the first time that Alexander Tkachenok wore this kind of beard; he had a different beard in the previous series, so my work on the image of the Elder was rather difficult. Nevertheless, all difficulties can be overcome if you are surrounded by a friendly crew who understand each other well and are always ready to help each other.”

“I saw how they were making up one of the characters,” Leonid Martyniuk, one of the extras, shares his impressions. “A middle-aged man turned into a senile old man after an hour or so of making up, and then… the way he stood and walked, his looks and facial expressions were like those of an 80-year-old. I was so surprised to see his transformation!”

Leonid is not a professional actor: he came to the filming location after he read an advertisement. He works as a janitor in one of the housing maintenance services of Minsk and has already taken part in the crowd on Belarusfilm studio. “Belarusfilm specializes in military films but I do not like this genre, I prefer religious or history films. In fact, it seems to me that we do not have enough spiritual films even though people need them badly.” Leonid has been participating in the crowd for two years, and he has even received a small part of an old monk in this series of The Three Parables.

“I have always been afraid of amateurs in film industry,” says Vitaly Lyubetsky, the film director. “However, it turned out that I had nothing to be afraid of; there are just moments when people should be themselves, not someone else. I try to do my best in order to allow every person on location to demonstrate his or her creativity, I listen to everybody, and if they have nice ideas that do not contradict the general concept that I have drafted in my mind, I accept them because cinema is team work. The Parables are, so to say, a genre of its own, which is popular not only in Belarus but also as far as Siberia, the Urals, and the Kamchatka.

Naturally, the audience looks forward to meeting their favourite film characters again but aside from the actors each episode of the film demands a certain place, certain objects and certain details that seem invisible at first sight. The quality of the film and its perception by the audience depends on these details. According to Mikhail Smirnov, the executive producer of the film, The Three Parables-4 features quite a few difficult locations, in particular with regard to the interior: take, for example, a businessman’s office in The Ladder. It had to be created from scratch in a completely empty room. Mikhail Smirnov believes that the projects related to spiritual nourishment give the feeling that you do not simply work but also do good because such projects have not just the aesthetic and cognitive functions but also nurture the souls of the audience. Mikhail Yessman who plays the part of the novice says that serious and important ideas in this film are reflected through the prism of our times, sometimes in an entertaining manner; this makes these ideas more likely to be understood by the audience. Perhaps, some people would recognise themselves in the novice and will be able to look at themselves from a different angle. Mikhail has been playing this part for three years now and this role is especially dear to him today. The actor definitely understands the responsibility that his role lays on him because the viewer’s perception of the novice in the Parables might translate into his perception of monasticism in general.

“We had a hard time thinking how to make a stairway to heaven in such a way that it would look nice in the film,” decorator’s assistant Oleg Lesun narrates. “This was the most complicated task because all the steps were golden and we had to polish them well. According to the script, the golden steps were supposed to hang in the air and the character had to walk on them; all this is the field of work for a CGI specialist. We had to meet with such an expert and to discuss all the details with him so everything depends on how well people understand one another, too! All furniture for the office of the main character of the Ladder was manufactured at the territory of the Convent with my advice and support because it was made by people who had never made decorations before. It must be noted that they did a great job: the furniture looked nice on screen; you would never tell that it was wooden. Unexpected problems do arise, of course, when the production process comes to a halt due to bad weather or other reasons but if you have all materials at hand, it is possible to restore and refurbish everything. Almost everything depends on the decorations so even in the case of a slightest problem the entire filming process may fail.”

The film is filled with various church items. These items were selected by Mikhail Volchek, an assistant director. He thinks that the more details are in the film, the more interesting it will be. “When I worked on this project I could feel the grace-filled atmosphere of the Convent, which shone even from the things I selected for the film: liturgical books, frescoes, church utensils.”

The greatest challenge was to find tomato plants and bring them to the Convent. The director brought a couple of plants from his dacha, and Mikhail Volchek brought the rest. It is common knowledge that these plants fade very quickly once they are uprooted. That was why they had to be handled with care during the filming. A person who sees them on screen will hardly even think how difficult it was to shoot them, although every shot of this film has its own story.

December 7, 1996 marked a very important day for St. Elisabeth Convent. On that day the Sisterhood in honor of St. Grand Duchess Martyr Elisabeth was founded. On the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria, Metropolitan Philaret of Minsk and Slutsk had vested the first sisters of mercy in their white vestments during the service at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. The first place where the sisters have come was the National Mental Health Hospital in Novinki (located near Minsk). In a year, the construction of the first church would be started there. Three years later Metropolitan Philaret would give his blessing for creation of the Convent. Today our home of mercy is not limited by the walls of the convent, as the hospital became its inalienable part as well…

“Your work is apostolic” : A story by nun Anfisa

20 years… A significant period. It passed quickly, like 2 years or even 2 months… Quickly and imperceptibly, but at the same time rich on results and events. However, the beginning was quite simple. Fr. Andrew gathered all the “lambs” together and said that it was enough feeling sad and that we had to start serving others. Those words were his blessing for our ministry. This is how our sisterhood had appeared.

When Metropolitan Philaret handed out our vestments, he said that St. Catherine blessed us on our apostolic way as well, and wished us strength. We did not understand anything, but we knew that that was what the Lord wanted. We vested and went to serve. The first sisters, who were blessed for that obedience, were headed to the Hospital in Novinki.

Everything happened then somehow imperceptibly and natural. It was just the Divine Providence. God acts very delicately, simply and invisibly day by day. In three years the first sisters have settled down here, in Novinki, to devote their whole life to serving God as monastics.

Our ministry is just an everyday labor. There are no high words or revolutionary slogans to describe it. Everything is quite simple: you should notice a person. The feeling of altruism ends quite soon, it is strong only at the beginning. And then there is only everyday labor left, and this is really hard. There might be a person sent just for you, and you just have to bring him his lunch. But you find yourself to be too busy, you have a lot to do and you need to go somewhere to deal with your own business… So this is it: you have to stop at the right moment, because to bring the lunch to this person is much more important. Our ministry is an everyday study, where we are learned to notice a person and to look in his eyes. Perhaps, even this would be enough to help him.

Earlier everything, that has happened within 20 years, seemed unreal to me. When any circumstances confuse me at my obedience of wherever else, I always recall what the sisterhood and the Convent have begun with. On the one hand, they have begun with the words of Fr. Andrew, who told us about building and edifying. On the other hand, everything has started with my absolute unbelief.

To be honest, everything we were talking about then seemed impossible to me. This 20-years-long way proved to me that there is nothing impossible for God! Now I am sure that He can easily perform something real and tangible from the beliefs and ideas, which in my opinion were unrealistic. This concerns not only the construction of the Convent, which is the material embodiment of the ideas, but the ministry itself and the people visited by our sisters. At the very beginning everything was grounded only on the boldness of Fr. Andrew and the grace of God. That was clear to me. Fr. Andrew says even today: “When I look back I ask myself, how could this all came to my mind?”

Despite my personal attitude and feelings, I understood – God let me understand - that the Convent would be organized.

“Novinki” is a dreadful word for people. It is not compatible with edifying, transfiguration or any other notion describing changes for the better. It is a territory, on which nothing was possible until 1996. People were afraid of that word. When Fr. Andrew offered to visit the hospital there, I was afraid too. Now I understand, that God acts more obviously when you try to deal with something impossible. Just look how many people opened up and came to the church thanks to our work!

I visit the narcological department. Every time I come there it feels like the first time. You cannot get used to this, because every time you come there you see people in bad condition, unconscious people, people tied to their beds… People are just dying there. So, you may ask yourself, is there really anything you can do here?

If there is God’s blessing, then it will grow even on the soil, which seems dead to us. I understand that the narcological department is not just dead soil, but cement. I go through this cement for the last 20 years. However, I understand also that I do it with God. Now I can say that trees can grow even on stones. These people are such trees. They always confess and partake of the Holy Communion. And this very experience of turning the unreal into the real is what “Novinki” gave to me. What is more, I learned that there are no insoluble life situations.

Fr. Andrew always says that without God’s blessing nothing would happen. Our Convent and everything that we see around seems natural to us today, but there would be nothing without the blessing of Fr. Nicholas Guryanov and the boldness of Fr. Andrew, our spiritual father. I come to the Convent, I see its walls, and only my own memories remind me about the wasteland which was there earlier. Today it seems as if it was always like this… The sisterhood and the Convent became a part of my life. In 1996, I thought that all these things were temporal in my life, and today I understand that my life depends on them. My whole life!

I remember well the day of December 7, 1996. There were not many sisters, just a bit more than 20. Metropolitan aspersed us with the holy water, put his hand on our heads and read the prayers. That was a kind of a real initiation, and it felt really like God’s blessing or even a tonsuring. On that day, my personal miracle happened. My parents, who lived 300 km far from Minsk, came to the city, certainly guided by the Holy Spirit. I had not told them about the ceremony of initiation. Just imagine that exactly on that day they decided to visit St. Peter and Paul Cathedral! My mother saw me and cried. That is how significant that event was.

“That was the birth day of the sisterhood”: A story by nun Juliana

What is surprising is that the birthday of the sisterhood concurred with the appearance of our first choir. Then it was an ensemble consisting of only six people on the kliros of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Fr. Georgy Latushko blessed to create a new choir. I gathered likeminded people and we started to rehearse. Well, when the time came, the abbot wanted to listen to our singing so that he could understand whether he was not mistaken about us.

We were to sing several church chants after the Holy Communion. I was very anxious and did not realize at once that something unusual was taking place in the cathedral. Metropolitan Philaret was standing on the solea, and the sisters in front of him were dressed in strange white kerchiefs and aprons (I did not know then that it was called “vestment”). Among the sisters, I saw several spiritual children of Fr. Andrew, the future nuns. Only a little bit later I realized that it was the appearance of the sisterhood and the Convent. In ten years, our small choir was transformed into the Festive choir of St. Elisabeth Convent. The seeds of all the undertakings sown by God in 1992 with the coming of Fr. Andrew grew as the small white sprouts. In 20 years those sprouts turned into the large Christian community, which is gently referred to by loving people as “Elisabeth’s children”.

What of the star itself? Many attempts have been made by scholars to give some sort of scientific explanation for the Star of Bethlehem. Indeed, there is substantial historic and scientific evidence of an unusual celestial event at the approximate time of the birth of Christ, yet even this would not explain the behavior of the star as described by the Holy Scriptures. Of course, to the Church there is a more mystical approach.

The Holy Fathers tell us that this star can be compared to the miraculous pillar of fire, which stood in the camp by night during Israel’s exodus, or the light from heaven, which overwhelmed Saul on his way to Damascus. St. John Chrysostom, in his homily on the second chapter of Matthew, says God called the wise men by the things that are familiar to them, for being astrologers they were naturally astonished at such a large star. He says that God, for the salvation of those in error, allowed Himself to be served by astrologers, normally used to serve the devil, so that He might gently draw the Magi away from their customs and lead them toward a higher wisdom.

St. Maximos the Confessor says that when the intellect is illumined by the infinite Light of God it becomes insensible to everything made by Him, just as the eye becomes insensitive to the stars when the sun rises. The Magi did not just drop off their gifts and leave, for they left from the presence of Christ as men forever changed by their experience. Their superior intellect and knowledge was confounded by the presence of a little child born under the humblest circumstances.

In keeping this great Feast of the Nativity of our Lord, we must receive this Light with joy, not putting it away at the end of the season, but rather let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16).

The Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called was the first of the Apostles to follow Christ, and he later brought his own brother, the holy Apostle Peter, to Christ (John 1:35-42). The future apostle was from Bethsaida, and from his youth he turned with all his soul to God. He did not enter into marriage, and he worked with his brother as a fisherman. When the holy Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John began to preach, Saint Andrew became his closest disciple. Saint John the Baptist himself sent to Christ his own two disciples, the future Apostles Andrew and John the Theologian, declaring Christ to be the Lamb of God.

After the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, Saint Andrew went to the Eastern lands preaching the Word of God. He went through Asia Minor, Thrace, Macedonia, he reached the River Danube, went along the coast of the Black Sea, through Crimea, the Black Sea region and along the River Dniepr he climbed to the place where the city of Kiev now stands.

He stopped overnight on the hills of Kiev. Rising in the morning, he said to those disciples that were with him: “See these hills? Upon these hills shall shine forth the beneficence of God, and there will be a great city here, and God shall raise up many churches.” The apostle went up around the hills, blessed them and set up a cross. Having prayed, he went up even further along the Dniepr and reached a settlement of the Slavs, where Novgorod was built. From here the apostle went through the land of the Varangians towards Rome for preaching, and again he returned to Thrace, where in the small village of Byzantium, the future Constantinople, he founded the Church of Christ. The name of the holy Apostle Andrew links the mother, the Church of Constantinople, with her daughter, the Russian Church.

On his journeys the First-Called Apostle endured many sufferings and torments from pagans: they cast him out of their cities and they beat him. In Sinope they pelted him with stones, but remaining unharmed, the persistant disciple of Christ continued to preach to people about the Savior. Through the prayers of the Apostle, the Lord worked miracles. By the labors of the holy Apostle Andrew, Christian Churches were established, for which he provided bishops and clergy. The final city to which the Apostle came was the city of Patra, where he was destined to suffer martyrdom.

The Lord worked many miracles through His disciple in Patra. The infirm were made whole, and the blind received their sight. Through the prayers of the Apostle, the illustrious citizen Sosios recovered from serious illness; he healed Maximilla, wife of the governor of Patra, and his brother Stratokles. The miracles accomplished by the Apostle and his fiery speech enlightened almost all the citizens of the city of Patra with the true Faith.

Few pagans remained at Patra, but among them was the prefect of the city, Aegeatos. The Apostle Andrew repeatedly turned to him with the words of the Gospel. But even the miracles of the Apostle did not convince Aegeatos. The holy Apostle with love and humility appealed to his soul, striving to reveal to him the Christian mystery of life eternal, through the wonderworking power of the Holy Cross of the Lord. The angry Aegeatos gave orders to crucify the apostle. The pagan thought he might undo Saint Andrew’s preaching if he were to put him to death on the cross.

Saint Andrew the First-Called accepted the decision of the prefect with joy and with prayer to the Lord, and went willingly to the place of execution. In order to prolong the suffering of the saint, Aegeatos gave orders not to nail the saint’s hands and feet, but to tie them to the cross. For two days the apostle taught the citizens who gathered about. The people, in listening to him, with all their souls pitied him and tried to take Saint Andrew down from the cross. Fearing a riot of the people, Aegeatos gave orders to stop the execution. But the holy apostle began to pray that the Lord would grant him death on the cross. Just as the soldiers tried to take hold of the Apostle Andrew, they lost control of their hands. The crucified apostle, having given glory to God, said: “Lord Jesus Christ, receive my spirit.” Then a blazing ray of divine light illumined the cross and the martyr crucified upon it. When the light faded, the holy Apostle Andrew had already given up his holy soul to the Lord. Maximilla, the wife of the prefect, had the body of the saint taken down from the cross, and buried him with honor.

A few centuries later, under the emperor Constantine the Great, the relics of the holy Apostle Andrew were solemnly transferred to Constantinople and placed in the church of the Holy Apostles beside the relics of the holy Evangelist Luke and Saint Paul’s disciple Saint Timothy.

We are keeping today the feast of St Andrew, whom we call in the Orthodox Church "The First-Called". We meet him for the first time in the Gospel on the banks of the River Jordan as disciple of St John the Baptist, together with him that later became St John the Divine, St John the Evangelist. Together with him, and hundreds of people he heard John, his teacher, his guide in the life of repentance proclaim Jesus who was coming towards them as the Lamb of God who takes upon Himself the sins of the world, declare Him to bе Him for whose sake he has come to the banks of Jordan to preach repentance, to turn the hearts of men towards their God, to call them to a new life of faithfulness.

And having heard that in Jesus this expectation, this longing had been fulfilled, Andrew, together with John, leaves his master, his teacher, the one who has turned his soul towards God, given him newness of life, he turns away from him, leaves him to follow Jesus, because this is why his master had come into the world: that he may proclaim Jesus in His coming, and then diminish for Christ to grow, before the eyes of men, in the lives of men, to be forgotten, because he was only the Forerunner.

To act as St Andrew did proved him to be a true disciple of his master; and how much each of us, all of us, we could learn in this act of greatness of heart, because it is hard to have found one who discloses to you what is precious in life, what is significant before God, who sets you on the way of repentance and of a new life, and then discover that he was nothing but a forerunner, nothing but one who was there to prepare the way of the Lord, and turn away from him, leave him to bring his message to others in order oneself to follow the Lord for whose sake he had preached, he had taught, he had been in the midst of men.

And John and Andrew leave him, and follow Christ who gradually leaves the banks of Jordan, going they do not know where; and Jesus stops and turns towards them because they are following Him, they pursue Him, having heard the message of John they will no longer let go of Him; and Jesus stops and says: what do you want of Me?.. And their answer is: we want to know where Thou dwellest... A simple phrase... And Jesus takes them with Him, and they spend a day with Him - but what do they discover? Is it only а wooden cabin, a hut of mud where Christ has been dwelling for a few days? One of the spiritual writers of our century says, No; they discovered two things. They discovered that the Annointed of God, the Christ, the Son of God incarnate lives indeed in a humble hut, that He Whose presence fills the Heaven which cannot contain Him, can dwell in a small cabin; but at the same time, listening to His word, looking into His face, plunging their gaze into His eyes they discover that before them there is One Whose dwelling is in Heaven, that they are in the presence of the living God Who has become man in order to save, to renew, to redeem, to live and to die for their sakes.

From that moment they become His disciples, they never will separate themselves from Him, they remain with Him, and their story merges with that of the other disciples - Peter, whom Andrew brings to Jesus, to whom he discloses Him Whom he has already discovered; John, who brings his brother, and all the other ones — Philip and Nathaniel, and everyone else.

And we meet him again in the Gospel, once, when, before the Crucifixion, fulfilling the prophecies of old, the Gentiles come to Jesus; and they turn to Philip and to Andrew because they recognise them as men of Galilee, of that region that was partly pagan, recognise in them people who will understand their language and understand also their desperate longing, because he has lived in their midst and he knows how poor they are and how their hearts long for fulfillment from Heaven, from God. And they them to Jesus. They are the first ones who opened the doors to the Gentiles, to bring them to the Lord. They prepared the way which later Paul will tread so gloriously, so conqueredly. Then, after the Crucifixion he shares with the other ones the agony, the horror of the death of Christ, and comes to life, no longer with the old, earthly life that has been his, but a new life, the life of the Risen Christ, the life of eternity in the resurrection of his blaster, his Saviour, his Lord and his God.

And when the Apostles dispersed to bring the good news to the whole world, he also goes to preach, and the story of his life brings him to the East and to the North, and we are told that he reaches as the ultimate point of his preaching the hills of Kiev in pagan Russia. And then he returns to die the death of martyrdom, in a manly, in аn unhesitating wау, dies, crucified as his Master.

How much we can learn from the life of this man, a simple man of Galilee who knew how to listen to a message, and to follow, first him who prepared the way of the Lord and then had the greatness of heart, the faithfulness to let go of the first hand that had brought him to the gates of eternity to follow Him Who was eternity, Life, God come into the world, and who throughout his life remained faithful, and was proof-prepared to pay the cost of this faithfulness, so that we may live, we may receive his message, we may also, through him, discover our Lord, and follow our only God, our only Lord, our only Saviour. Amen.
