Einstein once said something wonderful… Do not worry, it is not about physics or chemistry. “The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them”. I believe this statement to be absolutely true. Your mistake now is precisely this: you try to solve your problem only with your thoughts. But look, your own thoughts have brought you into this condition, your thoughts have led you to the destruction of yourself.

You would say: “What should I do? The thoughts I have are only my own, not someone else’s”. However, there is another thought. There is someone else’s mind besides yours: the Mind of Christ. You can do what the Apostle Paul said, “Acquire the Thought and the Mind of Christ”. This refers to another condition. In other words, you ask Christ to enter His atmosphere. This may be achieved in a few hours, in a few days, and even right now if Christ wants to perform a miracle. Right this very minute. Say, “O Christ, give me Your mind”. “We have the mind of Christ”, said the Apostle Paul. One should regard the events that happen around us the same way Christ would regard them: without excessive attachment. Identifying yourself with a problem leads to the loss of hope. Some people have lived with the Mind of Christ. They have succeeded. They have managed to live through deaths, many disappointments, dramatic stories, countless diseases, and various life miseries.

Just imagine: you have lost a child, some vital organ of your body, health or anything you can think of. How would you bear it all? However, people have suffered worse. Their secret was that they had acquired the mind of Christ. It is not easy. I am sorry that in difficult moments of your life I am giving you harsh advice acting like a know-it-all.

It is not my purpose. I have gone through difficulties before, the pain from which makes me immobile. Yet now when writing this, speaking to you like during a confession, I am in a good condition, thus I can give you some advice. Indeed if I felt any pain, I would not be able to speak like this. I would not even want to hear anything. Even think. I would be completely immersed in my misfortune.

Reading these lines, you can do something too. After all, you have put up with it for so long listening to me despite your problems and the fact that you are losing hope and you want to cry, we are spending time together now. It is a very good step. It is essential to let someone touch you and open up. Open your mind, open your soul and say, “Maybe, some day, some time, at some point, maybe, right now I will look at my life differently. If I do so, then I will smile, since having looked differently I will say, “Problems may be solved, they really pass. These will too. I must continue to live making efforts”.

The devil does not possess any power or authority over a person who believes in God and goes to church, goes to Holy Confession and Holy Communion. The devil can only bark like a toothless dog at such a person. However, he has great power over a person who does not believe in God, a person who gave up his rights and gave them to the devil. Such a man can be eaten alive by the devil - in this case he(the devil) has teeth, and he uses them to torture the poor man. In essence, the devil has power over a soul in accordance with the rights that it gives him.

When a person who has led a pious and spiritual life passes away, the ascent of his soul into Heaven is comparable to a racing train. Barking dogs can only run after the train, choking up on their own breath, they try to run ahead, but the train simply continues to pick up speed. On the other hand if a person whose spiritual condition is poor and leaves something to be desired passes away, then his soul ends up in a slow moving train. The train can not go faster because of faulty wheels . This allows the dogs to jump into the open doors of the train cars and bite people.

In the event that the devil has acquired even greater rights over a person, has possessed him, it is important to find the reason for this, so that the devil is deprived of these rights. Otherwise, even the prayers of others will not push the devil away and he will not leave as he continuously delivers new wounds to the person. Priests can try to exorcise that person over and over, but in the end the poor soul becomes even worse, because the devil tortures him with a greater force than before.

A person must repent, confess and finally deprive the devil of those rights that he himself passed over to the evil one. Only after this the devil will leave. Otherwise, the person will suffer greatly. Some can attempt to exorcise the person for days, months, even years, but the devil will continue to torture the long suffering soul and will not leave.

The devil enters into a man who has an impure and stained heart. The devil will not approach someone who is pure in the eyes of God. If the human heart is cleansed of dirt, then the enemy runs away, and Christ returns. The devil is like a pig, who will grunt and leave if it doesnt find the dirt it is looking for. Henceforth just like a pig the devil will not touch a soul that is pure. What did he forget in the hearts of the pure and humble, anyways?

Finally, if we begin to see that our house - the heart - has become a home to the enemy, a hut on chicken legs so to say, then we must immediately destroy it, so that the enemy could leave. After all, if sin lives in man for a long time, the devil naturally acquires greater rights over this person.

– Geronda, and what if a person used to live a wayward life and thereby gave the evil one rights to his soul, but now wants to change, begin to live anew, how does he fight the devil?

– When you return to God you receive power and strength from Him. He give a person enlightenment and comfort which is required at the beginning of the righteous journey. But as soon as a person begins a spiritual struggle, the enemy will not rest and begin a severe assault against him. That's when you need to show some restraint. Otherwise, how will passions be eradicated? How will the “old man” be healed? How will pride go away? And so a person realizes that he, himself, can not do anything. He humbly asks for the mercy of God, and humility comes to him. The same thing happens when a person wants to quit a bad habit. For example, quit smoking, drugs, drunkenness. At first, he feels joy and abandons this habit. Then he sees how others smoke, use drugs or drink, and begins to suffer. If a person overcomes this internal struggle, then it is no longer difficult for him to give up this passion, and turn his back on it. It is important to have a spiritual struggle, a battle, in order to succeed.

“Rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy” (1 Peter 4:13).

Once Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples and apostles: “But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them… But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13:9, 11).

Those words came to life already at the apostolic time. We know that during their preaching of the Kingdom of Heaven, Christ’s disciples suffered a lot for His name from various peoples who did not want to accept the news about the Resurrection of the Messiah. Many apostles faced various misadventures and tortures; they were beaten with sticks and stones, were imprisoned and had to starve and live in need.

The same concerns Apostle Peter who suffered from persecutions of King Herod: “Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to seize Peter also. Now it was during the Days of Unleavened Bread. So when he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to keep him, intending to bring him before the people after Passover” (Acts 12:2-4). While Peter was in prison, the whole church wholeheartedly prayed for him.

What was Apostle Peter thinking about during his captivity? The Book of Acts tells us that it was the time of Unleavened Bread, and the great feast of Pascha would come soon. Most likely, Peter could not but remember the events of that Pascha, of those days, when his Divine Teacher and Lord Jesus Christ washed his feet. “You shall never wash my feet!” – Peter said then. But the Lord replied to him: “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me”.

What else could the Supreme Apostle think about? He was probably sure that he did not have long to live. Apostle James, son of Zebedee, was executed with a sword, and Archdeacon Stephen was publicly beaten to death with stones. And now he was captured and would be brought to people after Pascha. Would he manage not to deny Christ this time? “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.” Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times” (John 13:37-38).

Perhaps, that was exactly what he was thinking about before he fell asleep. Was he worrying or scared? We do not know. However, the fact that Peter was lying bound with chains between two wardens and did not mention the angel, whose appearance filled the dungeon with light, proves that Apostle Peter was sleeping quietly, for he had put his life into God’s hands. To awake the apostle, the angel had even to poke him in his side. Peter woke up, the chains fell from his hands, and the angel released him from prison.

His time had not come yet, for he had to work a lot on preaching the Word of God, on preaching the Kingdom of Heaven, which had come near, and on spreading the Divine Grace, which purifies, enlightens and revives the whole human being.

What St. John Chrysostom says in his works:

“In that night He delivered him. And a light shined in the prison, that he might not deem it fancy : and none saw the light, but he only. For if, not- withstanding this was done, he thought it a fancy, because of its unexpectedness; if this had not been, much more would he have thought this: so prepared was he for death. For his having waited there many days and not being saved it-ia. caused this. Why then, say you, did He not suffer him to fall into the hands of Herod, and then deliver him? Because that would have brought people into astonishment, whereas this was credible: and they would not even hare been thought human beings”.

Reflections in the Holy Church tradition:

In very truth, thou wast called the Rock most rightly, whereupon the Lord hath strengthened the unshakeable Faith of the Church; for He made of thee a great chief shepherd over the rational sheep of His own flock. Wherefore, in that He is good, He hath appointed thee to hold the keys of the Heavens’ gates, to open unto all that with faith strive to enter in thereat. Hence, as was meet and right, thou wast vouchsafed to be crucified like as thy Master was. Do thou therefore entreat Him to enlighten and to save our souls. (Ainoi (praises) in Tone 4, Verse 3)

A Conversation About the Gospel with Priest Alexei Uminsky, published by the “Nikeya” publishing house in 2011.

It is very difficult to speak about the sufferings of Christ on the Cross… There is a wonderful hymn in our Church, chanted on Great Saturday:

“Let all mortal flesh keep silence and stand with fear and trembling. Ponder nothing earthly minded. The Kings of kings and Lord of Lords has come to give Himself as a sacrifice and give His own self for food to all the faithful.”

When one rereads the pages of the New Testament devoted to the Savior’s Crucifixion, or when one attends church during Holy Week, the events described by the Evangelists come before one’s mind’s eye. Here is Christ remaining silent before Pilate: for the Truth did not have any need of demonstration, the Truth did not need any excuses, the Truth could only reveal Itself and provide people with the opportunity to accept or refuse It.

But Pontius Pilate, who had the power cruelly to execute this Man or, on the contrary, to let Him go in peace, knew better than anybody that absolute Truth does not exist, because he was a Roman, because he was a cynic, and because he was a pragmatist. Pilate looked at everything from the outside, considering everything to be relative. He was amazed that Christ – through His silence, through His non-resistance, in His helplessness – revealed Himself to be absolute Truth.

Pilate faced a most important question: what should he do now with this Truth? Should he accept It and leave everything he had acquired, all his power and the considerable benefits that came with it, irreversibly ruining his brilliant career? Or should he keep what he had achieved, but all the while passing by the Truth and depriving himself of any meaning for his own life?

At that moment, Pilate stood at the crossroads, just like Herod, who could have saved John the Baptist, but did not. Pilate faced the same situation as did Judas, whose conscience pricked him, not granting him the opportunity to reconcile himself to his own betrayal.

The fate of the world and our salvation depended precisely on Pilate. He held power that was given to him by God. In the Gospel of John, Christ said in this respect:

“Thou could have no power at all against Me, except it were given thee from above” (John 19:11).

Pilate felt that and was amazed. He faced a helpless and beaten Prisoner, and he did not want to murder this Prisoner. He actually wanted to give Him freedom, but meanwhile he wanted to keep everything he had gained for many years; in other words, he wished to reconcile the irreconciliable, a wish so typical of all of us. When the Lord calls us to follow Him, we should be aware of the fact that the fulfillment of this calling will definitely require our refusal of something.

Pilate faced a truly terrible choice: in order to follow his conscience, he had to deny himself and his entire previous life. In that case, he would perhaps have become one of the Apostles and probably taken the place of the fallen Judas. But it is impossible to serve two masters simultaneously.

Pilate wished to let the King of the Jews go wherever He chose, but the people continued to behave violently and cry: “Free Barabbas at the Passover!” Barabbas appeared to be a folk hero: he was among the rebels who organized an uprising against the Roman authorities, against the annoying invaders. During the uprising, people died and Barabbas was sentenced to death.

Pilate was unable to act against his beliefs. He washed his hands in a demonstrative way, stressing that he was innocent of the blood of this Just Man. However, the symbolic gesture remained a mere gesture. “I am washing my hands of it!” is a phrase we ourselves often use, trying to lie to and comfort our uneasy conscience…

After a severe beating and humiliation, Jesus was could no longer carry His own Cross, collapsing under its weight. A person comes to help Him, whom we only know as the father of Alexander and Rufus, a certain Simon the Cyrene. He was the one who took up the Lord’s Cross. That man in reality had heard God’s calling:

“Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Mark 8:34).

Later, we see the names of Alexander and Rufus when we read the Acts of the Holy Apostles and the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Romans. According to Church tradition, they became followers of Christ. That means that Simon bore the Cross for a reason; it signifies that it was no accident he appeared near Christ; it means that this meeting dramatically changed his life.

In any case, a meeting with the Lord means a change of life for each one of us. Although the way our life will change depends on us alone! Frightful words were heard from the Cross:

“And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” (Mark 15:34).

Only a few women – the Most Holy Theotokos, Mary Magdalene, and Mary of Cleophas – stood near Him. His most beloved disciple, the future Evangelist John the Theologian, wept tears, but the other Apostles had run away, each his own way. But this betrayal was nothing compared to the loneliness that He suffered, having accepted all the sins of the world together with their consequences, the most terrible of which is man’s Godforsakenness.

Sometimes people who happen to be in difficult situations in life, or those who see the triumph of evil everywhere, fall into despair and rebuke God, saying: “Where were You when the Nazis used their gas chambers in their camps? Where were You when the tragedies occurred in Beslan and in Dubrovka?”

But Christ’s words put everything in its place. At that moment, the Lord was at the most terrible places, including Kolyma, Auschwitz, and Katyn.

There is no state of human despair that the Lord did not experience on the Cross: further evidence of this comes from an examination of the Shroud of Turin. That is why a person who cries out to Him from the depth of his sorrow will always be heard by Him, if he accepts his sufferings as the path to Christ: not as a dead end, but as a door, behind which alone he can find God. The person will find Him, if he calls upon Him from the bottom of his heart.

Anytime we are in despair and say: “My God! My God! Why has Thou forsaken me?” the Lord replies: “You are My beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. I am near you,” because the true Son of God underwent all human sufferings. There is no such terror and no such state of despair that Christ did not experience on the Cross.

The Gospel says:

“And they gave Him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but He received it not” (Mark 15:23).

Sometimes Roman soldiers did this out of mercy towards those who were crucified. Wine mingled with myrrh sent a person into a twilight sleep, a narcosis. But Christ did not accept this mercy, in order to experience the fullness of suffering.

“And they crucified Him. And the superscription of His accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. And with Him they crucify two thieves; the one on His right hand, and the other on His left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And He was numbered with the transgressors” (Mark 15:25-28).

The Crucifixion put everything in its place. Joseph of Arimathea was not an Apostle. Moreover, he was a member of the council that participated in making the decision to execute Jesus, although the Gospel says that Joseph also waited for the kingdom of God (Mark 15:43). He heard the Lord and believed in Him in secret.

At the most frightening moment, that person openly called himself a disciple of Christ. He, unlike Pilate, decidedly renounced his previous life and went to the governor and asked him to give him the Body of the crucified Christ. Joseph sacrificed his burial vault situated near Golgotha, covered the expenses for organizing the burial, and brought an expensive shroud and myrrh.

He takes the place of the run-away Apostles, along with the women, who also showed extraordinary courage. They loved their Teacher and trusted Him wholeheartedly.

Here we can see a most important characteristic of faith, which is called fidelity, when it seemed there was nothing left to believe in, because the hope of all people was being destroyed right in front of their eyes when Christ was crucified and buried. All people’s hope for the kingship of the Messiah, all their faith in His teaching, seemed to end with His death. What else could be done for Him? It appears that fidelity can be preserved until the end.

Dostoyevsky wrote that even if somebody could prove to him that the truth was not with Christ, he would still stay with Him, and not with the truth.

The Crucifixion was to have demonstrated to everyone that Christ had suffered defeat, to have proven that He was not God, that He did not manage to defeat His enemies, that He did not come down from the Cross, when the people shouted: “Ah, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days! Save Thyself, and come down from the cross” (Mark 15: 29-30). It seemed that the truth that was associated with power and authority was not with Christ. It meant that He was not all-powerful, it meant that He had no power, and that meant there was no Gospel, no truth.

People even now try to persuade themselves that acting according to the Gospel is impossible, because in that case one cannot gain anything, but only lose. Therefore, the Gospel is false. It means that there are some other truths.

So who are we with: are we with these mercantile “truths” or are we still with Christ? This question is relevant to each of us in the same way that it was relevant to Pontius Pilate, Simon of Cyrene, Joseph of Arimathea, Judas Iscariot, and King Herod.
