The Church lives with Christ, preaches His will and waits for Him
The Old Testament Church lived waiting for the Coming Savior. God said:
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are
they which testify of me” (John 5:39). Following God’s will we study the
Scripture, and we understand the Old Testament predicts the coming of Christ.
Of all the prophets of the Old Testament, John the Baptist is especially
esteemed. This great Saint stands on the border of two testaments. He
accomplishes the prophecies about Messiah and prepares the people for Christ’s
coming: “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before
me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the
messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the
Lord of hosts” (Mal. 3:1). In this great day of the Birth of John the Baptist
the Catalogue of Saint Elisabeth Convent offers Old Testament prophecies about
Christ for edifying and consoling.
Genesis, 3:15: And I will
put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it
shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Icon of King David |
Psalter, 72:11-13, 17: Yea, all
kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him
that hath no helper.
He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the
needy.
His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as
the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.

Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a

child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his
shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon
the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it
with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the
Lord of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah, 28:16: Therefore
thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a
tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth
shall not make haste.
Isaiah, 11:1-4: And there
shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of
his roots:
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of
the fear of the Lord;
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and
he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the
hearing of his ears:
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity
for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his
mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Jeremiah, 23:5-6: Behold, the
days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and

of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings

Zechariah, 12:10: And I will
pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit
of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have
pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and
shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
Zechariah, 6:12: And speak
unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose
name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build
the temple of the Lord.
Zechariah, 9:9-11: Rejoice
greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King
cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an
ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from
Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto
the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river
even to the ends of the earth.
As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy
prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.
John, 1:26-27: John answered
them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye
know not;

latchet I am not worthy to unloose

before me: for he was before me.And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel,
therefore am I come baptizing with water.
